14 stilt-walking metaphors for life

Dear fellow residents of the World of Blog,

I hope you are very well. My news is that I can finally, amazingly, walk on stilts free from ladders, hands etc! Here’s my compilation of learnings.

Things I have learnt about life by learning to walk on stilts (aka. Walking Tall through Life)

1 Keep centred, focus on the task whilst on stilts. Keep your centre of gravity low for stability. In life it helps to keep centred, it is stabilising too, and makes you have a clearer perspective on yourself and what is going on around you.

2 Move just your legs, not your whole body; a swaying torso compromises balance, and adds unnecessary effort. In life, focus on the required action and allow the remainder of yourself to support that.

3 It’s nice to hold someone’s hand but it’s really for mental reassurance. The real work is done in your own head and your own legs. Real life metaphor: Assistance is good and supports you with doing your own work.

4 Synchronise your arm movement with your leg movement. As in life, if things are integrated it all works better.

5 The stilts need to be taken care of; and attach the stilts really tightly so they don’t slide. As in life: work with good equipment, well maintained. Keeps you feeling safe and secure, thus able to concentrate on walking (living).

6 If at first you don’t get it, have a rest and try again with help. If you don’t get it that day come back another day. Keep coming back. Persistance is powerful.

7 A good teacher is worth a ton of guesses from not knowing. The kind teacher will keep gently pushing you along the process. They have seen people go through the stages you are going through more often than you have been through them! The good teacher is ahead of you on the learning path, but has doubled back to assist and encourage. As in life, there is great value in an experienced and patient teacher.

8 Keep hydrated but don’t drink free-standing till you are more accomplished. Hold the ladder at first cos when you throw your head back it will change your balance. In life, your aim is to improve, but for practicality sometimes you have to live within your abilities so you don’t crash!

9 Falling isn’t the end of the world. The earth is there to catch you. You still learn what you need to about falling even if somebody catches you. You don’t have to bruise your knees every time to learn your lessons. If you do get bruised arnica cream mitigates the damage. There is much learning and healing to be had from “failures”.

10 Fear keeps you safe. Fear makes you appreciate your achievement when you overcome it and master your task.

11 Keep your head up and look where you are going.

12 Advanced stilt walking and tricky stuff will come in good time! Life lesson: You are on your own personal timetable.

13 Enjoy the achievements of others and don’t compare yourself to others. The people who are ahead of you can teach you stuff and encourage and inspire you. They have their own timetables and obstacles. The people alongside you are your companions in the learning.

14 Even when you can’t do it yet, the act of trying is building up your muscles. Effort brings progress, even if not that all-obvious end point yet.

Be Brave and Take Care with stilt walking. life and all your endeavours,
Meg

Fringe Fun Finalised

Dear fine and fabulous readers,

We did our Fringe show run of 5 shows over 2 days, the first being a preview. Our coach said we did “…pretty well”.

I found it a strange cycle of warming up, 3 minutes of focussing, activity & effort followed by playing a part in the finale, and then an hour and a half of refuelling/chatting/ time-passing! Repeat. (And on the Saturday, repeat again).

I found the being-in-front-of-audience experience very different to the recent parade, and wasn’t constantly & overwhelmingly mortified this time. It was easier having something to do that I knew I could do! We had lights and smoke effects and applause. The applause was rewarding and we ran off smiling.

Overall it was fun, and personally, it was an achievement. I feel more confident and am physically stronger thanks to all the training.

My next project is to have a street stall at the pre-Easter market on Saturday. So today I need to check my Art Card stock, make sure I have business cards, an email sign up book, change, and my laminated “off-line web page” sheets!

I am desperate to print the next 3 lino blocks, which are inertly waiting. Here is a scan of one:

This will be reversed when printed, of course. I am impatiently anticipating doing the painting. Can’t wait to show you.

Hey – what do you guys think? Should I have an etsy shop for cards as well as my own web site, as well as an etsy shop for the original prints?

I have a private animation project that will be getting priority before I take on any big new things. Some friends are after web sites and whatnot, that shall be next, and we have a new module of music games we would like to get out in the first half of this year.

My ongoing “life activity” goals are to keep training enough to stay feeling fit and strong (tonight I am mixing it up and going to a dance class); and to reduce driving – cos for a month or so I have always been short on time and dependant on the car.

And music events shall be a part of this year too. I am looking forward to that as well. And rehersing to be in a singing group maybe.

Take care,
Meg

Fringe show nearly ready

Just a quick “Hi” today, SweetPeas!

Fringe practices are going well and we are spending much time on them. A few minor changes were made today to smooth the flow and speed some parts up a bit. We have less than a week til our first performance. The pants are being sewn and the excitement is building!

I am sure I will sleep well tonight!

Take care,
Meg

Georgeous Mothers Day competition – Cos Mums rock (and are gorgeous)

Dear and Lovely Readers,

I hope this finds you well and thriving.

I am pretty excited cos I have made a group AND a competition on FaceBook!

Dove

I made it so if you join the group, you go into the draw to win a Mothers Day gifty pack. It will be a gorgeous scarf from Oxfam and 6 of my art cards. Of course you can keep it all for yourself if you like!! I will post it out in time to mail or give to your momma by May 10th (that’s Mothers Day here in Australia this year).

People who joined almost the moment I made the group get 5x chances in the draw, and people who join before the end of this month, March, get double chances. I found a Random Number generator on the internet, so will assign everyone who is in the group on the final day a number (in order of joining), and put the lowest (1) and the highest (x) into the program to determine the winner.

So if you already “go on” FaceBook, here’s the link to the Tangerine Meg Art Cards Group. Join up if you like. I would be really pleased to see you there. If you do, you can “message me” or “write on the wall” to let me know that you found out about it via this blog. That last sentence sounded really funny if you aren’t used to those terms in context of FaceBook.

Random other news: I went for a run in the wonderful, much-needed rain this morning! My clothes, shoes and I were pretty well drenched by the time we got back. It was a good run though.

I am recovered from feeling bad about the parade and am including it in the “things I now know about myself” category!

Soon to come: How Learning to walk on stilts is like learning to live well!

Take most excellent care of yourselves,
Meg

Confessions of an anxious parader

Hello my petals,

Apparently I looked “hot” (someone complimented me) but I really DID NOT enjoy the walking in the parade. People were looking. Lots and lots of people. Mercifully the distance was short. I faced forwards, and stuck to the middle of the road. I gave my hand-out leaflets to the other, outgoing punks.

I had a great time with the dressing up bit and the putting together of the outfit. This is me afterwards. As you can see by my curtain fabric, the punk thing is of a different genre to my usual life/home.

More learning for life: I am not currently either a natural or trained performer. (I was ok back home afterwards taking the shots with family members). Also I got a big blister on my heel from the combination of fish-nets and big borrowed boots!

Sigh.

Take care, punks and not punks,
Meg

Fringe Parade Tomorrow

Hi there dear and wonderful readers!

Good work Seth Godin on your 3000th blog post, yes that is Three Thousand. I am here at 100-ish, in awe.

I believe I have kept you up to date with my not-quite-good-enough-for-the-Fringe-Parade stilt-walking. Well, I have an opportunity to go in the Parade (tomorrow evening) walking on my own stable legs:

For this I get to dress up as a punk!
I have had my hair cut, I will take purple hair spray. Will apply fake tattoos, tonight I think. I have big borrowed bovver boots. I have tights and distressed denim, and tons of safety pins. I purchased, cut and safety-pinned some great op shop finds – a t-shirt and a vest. I hired some studded bands for wrist and neck. I bought some really awful plastic fake-piercing rings, I don’t think I’ll bother about using those.

If I don’t get nervous about the crowd it should be good fun. I might even bring you pictures.
Afterwards there will be bands and things, as it’s the OPENING OF THE 2009 ADELAIDE FRINGE FESTIVAL. Hooray!

So I must keep it short, and away and organise all the things I need to take to make my transformation in the bathroom after work.

Take care of yourselves in all ways,
Meg

Mild-mannered days

Hi there super-folk!

The heatwave is over in Adelaide (for now), but many in Victoria many are suffering still. There are massive bushfires with much death and much destruction. I have little to complain about with a few crispy sunburnt plants in my garden being the worst of it. I was thinking I would book in to give blood, and maybe go to a fundraising dance tomorrow night.

My original intention for this blog, ie. art in progress, will be manifesting today. Hooray! I didn’t realise that it would be something I was able to attend to so intermittantly. However during my lack of mentioning it I have in fact managed to design and carve 3 lino prints which await the printing press and the excitement of their first print. I hope you have been fed well enough with my web links, green activities, stilt-walking efforts and other musings in between seasons!

I have lino block (or “matrix”) to show you:

autumn fairy

autumn fairy

The top of the lino is isn’t really cut off, it’s just that the lino is too big for the scanner glass, and the scanner stopped talking to the computer before I could do the top edge and photoshop them together. You get the jist though, right? She is is flying, flowy and swirly. I like the little curlicues at the ends of her hair.

Keeping my eye on my (crazy busy) timetable for an opportunity to borrow a friend’s press (the success rate of the prints is SO much higher) and print some off.
Part of the reason I am crazy busy is that I am going to be doing a little bit of circus in the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and this requires extra training sessions. This seems to clash with everything! I am not going to also try to master stilt-walking by then. I am going to progress at my own (slow) rate, and maybe join in with it next year. And try to be gentle on myself for not “getting it” faster. Lucky me it’s not an essential skill for existance!!

Be well,
Meg

Validate your knees, Heroes

Dear happy campers, I have a random mix of snippets for you today,

If you haven’t had a look at the short film “Validation” yet, I would recommend you do so. I linked to it on YouTube in my last post. It makes me smile every time I watch it. (That comment will make even more sense to you after watching as well!)

Knee update: Healing nicely. Arnica cream, aloe vera gel, and treating them with a bit of kindness is getting them back to happy.

A TV trivia link for you: 63 reasons to keep watching Heroes. The airing dates will be ok for American readers/watchers, will be out of sync for Aussies.

Keep cool (if in Oz) or keep warm (if in North parts of Earth – can’t believe I am looking at photos of snow while drinking iced water),
Meg
